Distributor using AI business intelligence to make smarter purchasing decisions
Buy based on signals, not guesswork

Most distributors I talk to are making purchasing decisions off a spreadsheet someone built three years ago and a gut feeling developed over a decade. That combination works, until it doesn't. And when it doesn't, you're either sitting on 90 days of a slow-moving SKU that's eating shelf space, or you're short on something that moved twice as fast as your history said it would.

AI-driven business intelligence is starting to change that math in ways that are actually practical. Not magic, not a crystal ball — just a system that's reading more signals than a human buyer realistically can. Sell-through velocity by location. Seasonal drift patterns. Supplier lead time variability over the last 18 months versus the number on your vendor agreement. When that information is in front of a buyer before they cut a PO, the decisions get tighter.

I talked with someone running procurement for a regional grocery distributor earlier this year. They had a produce supplier whose on-time delivery had quietly slipped from 94% to 78% over six months. Nobody caught it because they were looking at invoices, not patterns. An AI layer watching that data would have flagged it after week three. Instead they found out the hard way, during a high-volume week, with two retail accounts on the phone.

The tool doesn't replace the buyer. A good buyer still knows things the data doesn't — a vendor relationship, a market rumor, a quality issue that never made it into the system. But the buyer who has clean intelligence in front of them before every order is working at a different level than the one who isn't. Fewer reactive buys. Fewer overstock write-downs. Better conversations with suppliers because you're coming in with numbers.
