Why Your Inventory Team Looks Like They're Holding Their Breath

Inventory inherits every shortcut the warehouse takes

I've never met a lazy inventory team. Not once. What I have met, over and over, is inventory teams running on bad tools and worse timing, expected to produce accurate numbers in conditions that almost guarantee they won't.

Here's the thing people outside the warehouse don't get: the count never happens in isolation. The dock is receiving while the pickers are still pulling from the same locations you're trying to freeze. Someone scheduled a putaway run at the same time as the cycle count. The RF guns are shared with the pick floor and there aren't enough to go around. You're doing the count with three people when the job really needs five, because two called out and the manager pulled one to cover shipping. Every one of those things creates a discrepancy that isn't a counting error — it's a systems error. But guess who owns the variance? The inventory team.

And then there's the software. A lot of teams are still reconciling counts in a spreadsheet that gets emailed around, or working in a WMS that hasn't been updated since 2017 and requires four screens to adjust a single SKU. By the time the count data is cleaned up and entered, the floor has moved on and the numbers are already slightly wrong again. You're chasing accuracy with a bucket that has a hole in it.

The stress isn't about the work being hard. The work is fine. It's the feeling that no matter how carefully you count, something upstream is going to create a problem downstream that lands on you. That's a different kind of tired — the kind that doesn't go away after a weekend.

If your inventory team always looks stretched, it's worth asking what you're actually asking them to absorb. Better processes and better tools don't solve the people problem. But they do stop making the people problem worse. That's where we started building CountIt, and it's what we keep coming back to.
